Meeting Dolores Huerta

In diversity, empowerment, leadership, resilience, woman leader

Attending conferences has its perks. So I was thrilled to be part of the team of Executive Coaches at the 2018 Multicultural Women’s Conference hosted by Working Mother Media. Imagine my surprise when I found out that Dolores Huerta was the keynote speaker!

There is so much I can share about Dolores Huerta, from being the co-founder–along with César Chávez– of what is now known as the United Farm Workers to being a civil rights activist for longer as I have been alive. She is one of my personal sheroes.

When I spotted Ms. Huerta graciously posing for pictures during the conference, I got right on the queue and waited my turn. The few moments I spent chatting with her felt like I was talking to one of my aunties. Her warmth and presence felt like vitamins for the soul. I told her so, in Spanish. She loved it. She told me to keep on using my voice as a Latina and a feminist.

Sí, señora Huerta. ¡Sí se puede! Yes, I can. Yes, we can!
